How to prepare effectively for the trainer briefing!

Part 2 of the series: "How to find the right trainer!"

After you have selected a qualified trainer, e.g. based on the checklist (see "SIM Aktuell" Issue 3/2011), your next step is to convey the reasons and goals of your planned training to the trainer in a result-oriented way.

What is the use of holding a briefing? It is the start point and lever for your training. It clarifies contract contents and can be referred to for procurement purposes. Additionally it is used to provide the trainer with insights to specific company facts, thereby enabling him/her to become familiar with the superior goals, strategies, culture, and the people.
Also ensure that the trainer has the required competence profile for the planned training.
What should be part of the briefing?

  • Clarification of the assignments, to include learning goals, services, fees, daily allowances, confidentiality, trainer and possible costs for special exercises
  • Feedback regarding the offer and the preliminary concept proposal
  • Reconciliation and feasibility-check
  • Communication of basic conditions
  • Securing a common understanding of all issues
  • Communication of company specifics, e.g. values, leading culture
  • Prioritization of contents and proceedings
  • Scheduled date for the training
  • Definition of the next steps

If you mention all aspects, clarify and approve them in detail, you can generally rely on having a good basis for a successful training.
